I push the button in my van in order to open the garage door and then drive into my garage. I get out of my van, walk to the door, and push the button to shut the garage door.
This winter, that has been the extent of my interaction with my neighbors. Hmmm….I think I’m missing something….Oh, yeah….the neighbors and the interaction!
Recently we had an evangelistic Family and Friends Week at our church. I encouraged my kids to invite their neighborhood friends to the 2 teen nights. After reminding them several times during the weeks and days preceding the event, my daughter said, “Why don’t you invite our neighbor to the ladies’ night?”
Well, to be honest, I hadn’t had much interaction with our neighbors lately. Oh, when the kids were younger, I would be outside with them as they played with the neighborhood kids, and I would talk with the other moms as we watched our kids scooter, bike, and shoot baskets. Now that the kids are older and don’t need that kind of supervision, the other moms and I don’t talk that much. <blush>
Hmmm….I also needed to pass on to my neighbor some information about a music class we had briefly discussed in the fall. Yeah, that was long overdue too!
So, with a pricked heart, I headed over to our neighbor’s house. We had a nice little visit, catching up on some things. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to come to the ladies’ night due to a sick child and another activity that night, but she seemed truly interested in coming to a ladies’ activity another time….and it was a step in building a relationship.
As I headed out the door, she said, “ Come over again sometime. Don’t be a stranger!”
Yes, that’s what I have been this winter. I push the button in my van in order to open the garage door and drive into my garage. I then get out of my van, walk to the door, and push the button to shut the garage door.
Lord, help me to not be a stranger to my neighbors! Help me to be interacting with those around me, building relationships.
