I used to think I did a good job of praying for others. Then last month the Lord showed me how much more I could be praying for my children. While writing last month’s post, I began to see how vague my prayers were for my husband also. That led me to think more about the needs of my husband and to dig more into God’s Word about how I can better pray for him.
Although this is probably barely scratching the surface of what all I can pray for him, here is what I have come up with so far.
1. Have wisdom and knowledge
With home, work, and church responsibilities, our husbands need God’s wisdom to deal with all that comes their way.
“Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?”
2 Chronicles 1:10
“Through wisdom is an house builded;
and by understanding it is established:
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled
with all precious and pleasant riches.”
Lord, give my husband wisdom, knowledge, and understanding as he goes in and out each day, leading at work, in our home, and in church. Fill our house with Your precious and pleasant riches.
2. Walk right
Our children are watching us. We so need His help to walk right in His ways, and we want our children to receive His wonderful blessings.
“The just man walketh in his integrity:
his children are blessed after him.
Help my husband and me both to walk right in Your way and help our children to be blessed.
3. Be protected
I don’t know if your husband has a long commute like mine, but with more than an hour long commute each morning and evening, I pray for protection for my husband.
“For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous;
with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
“Behold, he that keepeth Israel
shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper:
the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in
from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Psalm 121:4-5, 8
Lord, thank you that you are never asleep while protecting my husband. Please surround my husband with Your protection as we go throughout the week. Guard him and defend him as he comes and goes.
4. Be pure
Just like our children are bombarded with inappropriate things on the computer, so are our husbands. With my husband’s line of work, he is constantly on the computer. We do use accountability software, but I still believe we must pray for our husbands to be pure in this very impure world.
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5
“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”
Lord, protect him from pornography and inappropriate relationships. Help him to keep his thoughts under control and in obedience to you, not feeding his flesh, and help me to meet his needs.
5. Practice self-control
Okay, so maybe this is something to pray not just for my husband, but also for myself. Life gets so busy, and it is so easy to toss aside exercise and rest to get all those other “necessary” things done!
“But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.”
1 Corinthians 9:27
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Lord, help my husband in his busy schedule to make the time to discipline his body, to keep it under control in order to eat right, exercise, get the rest he needs, and glorify You.
6. Keep focused
It’s not just kids that get easily distracted. My husband has so many things to do that it can be easy for him to lose focus on what he’s working on when he suddenly thinks of yet another item that needs his attention too.
“Let thine eyes look right on,
and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”
“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
Lord, my husband has so much to do and so many things that can distract him from what he needs to do, please help him to keep his eyes right on the task at hand that he will do it heartily for You.
7. Look to You in times of stress
Yes, our husbands definitely have much on their plates! I can’t remove the stress from my husband’s life, but I can help him by hugging him and praying for him.
“O Lord, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee:
be thou their arm every morning,
our salvation also in the time of trouble.”
“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace,
whose mind is stayed on thee:
because he trusteth in thee.
Trust ye in the Lord for ever:
for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.”
Lord, please be my husband’s arm of strength today. When he is feeling overwhelmed, help him to look to You as his rock. Help him to trust in you and know Your perfect peace and everlasting strength.
